Brief Description of the Project

The project “Beyond.Additive - New generation of technological developments focused on the additive manufacturing of large metallic components” promoted by a consortium made up of ADIRA (leading promoter), CEiiA and IST (ENESII), aims at research and development of 2nd generation of additive manufacturing technology integrated in the ADIRA AM equipment (equipment for large metallic additive manufacturing). Thus, the project materializes the evolution of the TLM technology (Tiler Laser Melting) - integrated in the AM equipment - with the aim that it starts to integrate new functionalities, namely, better control of the process, thus enhancing the use of new materials and, consequently , penetration into new market segments with higher added value, but also more competitive. To this end, the technological development of the product is thus a central pillar of this initiative, with the additive manufacturing system being the centerpiece in this productive value chain. Likewise, the project will also result in the creation, updating and systematization of new scientific and empirical knowledge relevant to different domains of additive manufacturing, which will be included in a free access database, which will thus gather all the strategic information on all the manufacturing components. additive, thus contributing to Portugal's specialization in what is one of the state-of-the-art technological domains. The Beyond.Additive project, lasting 24 months, is organized into six main activities (Industrial Research and Experimental Development) and a project management support activity. All activities are highly complementary in terms of objectives and approach.

Brief Description of the Project O Fabrico Aditivo (FA) é uma tecnologia de produção que permite produzir peças com formas complexas a partir de dados digitais. No contexto de competitividade industrial que se verifica atualmente, o FA é uma tecnologia que tem de ser explorada, na medida em que pode responder às exigências do mercado pelo facto de gerar soluções céleres e permitir obter produtos inovadores, com características mecânicas e funcionais semelhantes às obtidas pelos processos definitivos, com grande liberdade ao nível da geometria e seleção de materiais, e com vantagens significativas em termos de flexibilidade, qualidade e custo de produção.

 

In the scope of the FA, the relationship that exists between material and the production process takes on special importance, as these factors are interdependent, contrary to what occurs in the traditional method of material subtraction. The study and development of this relationship will allow the creation of new products, processes and equipment, being the basis of the entire mobilizing project. The structure and organization of the project itself is oriented towards simple reading and interconnected with the development and enhancement of results. Appreciation in terms of research and development, in terms of the availability of equipment with national technology, materials for AF, engineering capabilities for high performance components, inspection according to standardization and reinforcement of a national infrastructure network with a world spectrum.

 

The Add.Additive project has as main objectives: to answer the major research and development questions that affect the material-process relationship in Additive Manufacturing methods, based on a set of co-motors with knowledge and experience in the relevant technical-scientific domains and with national and international representation. It is intended to leverage the valuation of results in several sectors, through a coordinated strategy between industrial partners and research institutes and centers, with the knowledge generated being valued through activities of creation, diffusion, transfer, use and incorporation of technology based on three pillars: science and technological development; internalization of knowledge and technology by borrowers; and their use by potential end users.

Synthesis, objectives, activities and expected results |

 

The SLM-XL project aimed to develop a good for equipment for the additive manufacture of large metal parts / components using laser technology for the process of joining metal powders. Additive manufacturing, referred to worldwide as a precursor to the third industrial revolution, has an increasing role in industry in developed countries and the trend is to evolve towards the manufacture of large components, namely for the automotive and aeronautical industry.

 

For the execution of the project, a wide range of complementary technical-scientific skills was gathered through the constitution of a consortium that includes co-drivers of the national scientific and technological system involved - INEGI, IST-UTL, FCTUNL - and international consulting via Fraunhofer ILT, and the companies involved - ADIRA MFS (Promotor Líder) and Manuel Conceição Graça - who have technological capabilities and experience proven by their long history in the development / industrialization of advanced equipment and the manufacture of components for demanding sectors of activity, respectively.

To revitalize the industrial sector, investment in R&D is imperative, developing new knowledge-based technologies, without forgetting a rapidly developing digital world. In response to this paradigm of digitalization in the industrial sector, Industry 4.0 (Industry 4.0) emerges, in which production technologies are combined with the most advanced information systems and communication technologies. In this sense, there is an evident need to find innovative, modular and economically viable solutions that make it possible to transform capital goods into Industry 4.0 Components. On the other hand, industry 4.0 presents a very broad conceptual and theoretical framework involving deep work at the level of its parameterization (eg RAMI 4.0) and standards or trends at the level of technological layers (communication protocols, sensing, among others), however , there are no implementations that can be considered a reference waiting for the market to appear application frameworks. ADIRA INDUSTRY 4.0 will take advantage of this reference gap by creating a reality applied to machine tools, metalworking and SMEs, allowing the company to configure innovative products / services. In addition to innovation in terms of the component integration and administration layer, one of the most disruptive aspects is related to the integration with both new equipment goods and those of previous generations, or current ones, but which do not have compatibility with Industry 4.0. In reality, the approach through retrofitting modules, involving the mechatronic component and the sensor layer, presents itself as highly promising, since it allows to quickly expand to existing equipment or not compatible with the industry 4.0 concept. This new product / service of high technological density to be developed and implemented by ADIRA MFS is an innovative solution worldwide capable of generating new strategic markets.
