Brief Project Description
The IDT-4Additive Nucleus project was designed to explore and implement practices that allow the consolidation of the use and application of additive manufacturing technologies to the production of special tools, in particular thermoplastic injection moulds: SLM- Selective Laser Melting and Laser Cladding, also known as Direct Energy Deposition (DED), which have played a relevant role over time, particularly for parts/tools of significant size. The particularities of the technologies and their specifications mean that each one has different advantages, whether we are referring, for instance, to the manufacture of moulds with conformable channels or to the reconstruction of a mould. The Nucleus 4additive consortium includes types of companies and complementary entities with expertise in each of the major technological areas important to the process: additive process manufacturing for large parts (ADIRA); mould design and manufacturing (Plácido Roque); thermoplastics injection (Plastimago); research units dedicated to the optimisation of the additive process versus the material to be used (CEMMPRE), project oriented to additive manufacturing (CDRSP-IPLeiria) and definition of design and engineering methodologies in the manufacture of moulds by this new manufacturing process (CEMMPRE and CDRSP).

Brief Project Description
The project "Beyond.Additive - New generation of technological developments focused on additive manufacturing of large metallic components" promoted by a consortium composed by ADIRA (leader promoter), CEiiA and IST (ENESII), has as purpose the research and development of the 2nd generation of additive manufacturing technology integrated in the ADIRA AM equipment (equipment for large-sized metallic additive manufacturing).
Thus, the project materialises the evolution of TLM technology (Tiler Laser Melting) - integrated in the AM equipment - with the intention that this will integrate new functionalities, namely, better process control, thus enhancing the use of new materials and, consequently, the penetration in new market segments of higher added value, but equally more competitive. To this end, the technological development of the product is a central pillar in this initiative, and the additive manufacturing system is the central piece in this productive value chain. The project will also result in the creation, updating and systematization of new scientific and empirical knowledge relevant to different domains of additive manufacturing, which will be translated into an open-access database that will gather strategic information on all components of additive manufacturing, thus contributing to Portugal's specialization in this state-of-the-art technological area.
The Beyond.Additive project, lasting 24 months, is organised into six main activities (Industrial Research and Experimental Development) and a project management support activity. All activities are highly complementary in terms of objectives and approach.

Brief Project Description | Additive Manufacturing (AM) is a production technology that enables the production of parts with complex shapes from digital data. In the current context of industrial competitiveness, AM is a technology that must be explored, as it can respond to market demands by generating fast solutions and allowing innovative products to be obtained, with mechanical and functional characteristics similar to those obtained by the definitive processes, with great freedom in terms of geometry and selection of materials, and with significant advantages in terms of flexibility, quality and production cost.
In the context of AM, the relationship between material and production process assumes a special importance, as these factors are interdependent, contrary to what occurs in the traditional method of material subtraction. The study and development of this relationship will enable the creation of new products, processes and equipment, being the basis of the whole mobilising project. The structure and organisation of the project itself is oriented towards simple reading and interconnected with the development and valorisation of results. Valorisation at the level of research and development, at the level of the availability of equipment with national technology, materials for AM, engineering capabilities for high performance components, inspection in accordance with standardisation and reinforcement of a network of national infrastructures with worldwide spectrum.
The Add.Additive project has as main objectives: to respond to major research and development issues that focus on the material-process relationship in Additive Manufacturing methods, based on a set of co-promoters with knowledge and experience in relevant technical and scientific fields and with national and international representativeness. The aim is to leverage the valorisation of the results in various sectors, through a coordinated strategy between industrial partners and research institutes and centres. The knowledge generated is valorised through activities of creation, dissemination, transfer, use and incorporation of technology based on three pillars: science and technological development; internalisation of knowledge and technology by the users; and their use by potential end users.

Summary, objectives, activities and expected results | The SLM-XL project aimed to develop an equipment asset for additive manufacturing of large metallic parts/components using laser technology for the joining process of metallic powders. The additive manufacturing, worldwide referred as a precursor of the third industrial revolution, has a growing role in the industry in developed countries and the trend is to evolve to the manufacture of large components, namely for the automotive and aeronautical industries.
For the execution of the project, a wide range of complementary technical and scientific skills were brought together through the establishment of a consortium that includes co-promoters from the national scientific and technological system involved - INEGI, IST-UTL, FCTUNL - and international consultancy via Fraunhofer ILT, and the companies involved - ADIRA MFS (Lead Promoter) and Manuel Conceição Graça - that have proven technological capacities and experience due to their long history in the development/industrialisation of advanced equipment and the manufacturing of components for demanding sectors of activity, respectively.

To revitalise the industrial sector, it is imperative to invest in R&D, developing new knowledge-based technologies, without forgetting a strongly developing digital world. As a response to this paradigm of digitalisation of the industrial sector, Industry 4.0 has emerged, in which production technologies are combined with the most advanced information systems and communication technologies. In this sense, there is a clear need to find innovative, modular and economically viable solutions that enable the transformation of capital goods into Industry 4.0 Components. On the other hand, Industry 4.0 presents a very broad conceptual and theoretical framework involving deep works at the parameterization level (e.g. RAMI 4.0) and standards or trends at the technological layers level (communication protocols, sensors, among others), however, there are no implementations that can be considered reference, waiting for the market the emergence of application frameworks. ADIRA INDUSTRY 4.0 will take advantage of this lack of references creating a reality applied to machine tools, metalworking and SME, allowing the company to configure innovative products/services. Beyond the innovation in the Components integration and administration layer, one of the most disruptive aspects concerns the integration both with new equipment goods and with those of previous generations, or current ones but not compatible with Industry 4.0. In fact, the approach through retrofitting modules, involving the mechatronics component and the sensing layer, presents itself as strongly promising, since it allows to quickly extend to existing equipment or not compatible with the Industry 4.0 concept. This new product/service of high technological density to be developed and implemented by ADIRA MFS is a worldwide innovative solution capable of generating new strategic markets.
